Glamping With the Stars
  + stars: | 2024-05-01 | by ( Colleen Creamer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I’d headed west for the sun, but even more so for the night sky, so I was hoping for clear weather ahead. The glamping resort, one of 12 Under Canvas sites, is anchored on a canyon rim plateau in southern Utah and is the first resort in the world to be certified by the nonprofit authority on light pollution, DarkSky International. My aim was to beat the heat and the crowds — but what I really wanted was to be an early adopter of certified starry resorts. The DarkSky Approved Lodging program is another step forward in the nonprofit’s history of advocacy for the reduction of light pollution. Broadly, the requirements for certification include being situated in an “exceptionally” dark location; having approved means of reducing the impact of light at night; and providing educational materials about night sky conservation to guests.

Both are adding glamping resorts to their booking channels, where their members can earn and redeem points. Interest in high-end camping has remained strong since its boom during the COVID-19 pandemic. No word yet on whether it will include the high-end hotel brand's 12 other luxury camping resorts. But the addition of these glamping resorts to its booking channels isn't Hyatt's first venture into glamping. Alongside the Caribbean property's existing traditional hotel, Hyatt plans to deploy modular tiny-home-sized hotel room units directly on the beach.

Travelers can soon use Hilton Honors points at AutoCamp's popular "glamping" resorts. The rapidly expanding luxury camping chain has seven locations, many near national parks. The expanded property is set to use modular, tiny home-sized units as hotel rooms. The 52 units are scheduled to open in June at Hyatt's Dreams Curaçao resort in the Caribbean. Soon, they'll be dropped onto the sunny and sandy beaches of tourist-beloved Curaçao in the Caribbean — not as housing, but as hotel rooms. Hyatt is expanding its all-inclusive Dreams resort on the Caribbean island. But instead of building another typical highrise hotel, the hospitality giant is taking a page out of the glamping resort playbook with plans to deploy 52 tiny home-sized modular units as hotel rooms, set to open in June.

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve. Still, it was a wonderful experience, and if I had more money, I may feel differently. But again, as far as the safari experience goes, the private reserve is hard to beat. And if luxurious lodges are out of the question, private reserves can also be visited more affordably. Some lodges inside private reserves, like Shindzela or Rhino River Lodge, can cost around $250 per person per night.

What it's like to take the Cybertruck camping

Tesla owner Ben Levin went camping in Texas with the company's newest EV, the Cybertruck. AdvertisementTesla's rough-and-tumble Cybertruck might be perfect for camping, at least according to one owner, but it's missing one key feature — enough heat in the truck's bed for chilly nights. Levin identified several Cybertruck features that made it ideal for camping, including the spacious design of the truck. Cybertruck owner bought a truck tent to go camping. AdvertisementTo combat the cooler temperatures, Levin said he'd recommend Cybertruck owners consider bringing a heated blanket or portable heater for camping trips in colder weather.

Elon Musk's Cybertruck apocalypse
  + stars: | 2023-12-05 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +8 min
In most regards, the sales pitch for Tesla's new Cybertruck doesn't differ in its particulars from the value proposition of any other pickup or SUV. But unlike the Cybertruck, its sales pitch has a curve: Musk has said all along that it's designed to be your go-to vehicle for the End of the World. "The apocalypse could come along at any moment, and here at Tesla we have the finest in apocalypse technology." If you believe in an apocalypse with trucks, you must also believe that someone will be maintaining the necessary infrastructure. In the early 20th century, when cars first came within financial reach of average Americans, the sales pitch focused on freedom of movement.

Urban rivers, lakes, and parks can also be the key to making cities more resilient to climate change. The 1,200 tons of sand near Greenwich Village along the Hudson river would have to do. But there's no public pool nearby, and no sanctioned river swim spots in the city. The sandy bluff on Gansevoort peninsula is part of the much larger Hudson River park and looks out over Little Island, a whimsical, highly instagrammable transformation of Pier 55. Seattle has torn down an elevated freeway downtown to make way for a waterfront park.

Make America Build Again
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +37 min
America is the sixth-most-expensive place in the world to build subways and trolleys. The solutions will cost trillions of dollars and require a pace of building unseen in America since World War II. Perhaps the single most pressing question we face today is: How do we make America build again? "For this class of projects, federal environmental laws are more the exception." The prospect of overhauling our hard-won environmental laws might feel like sacrilege to anyone who cares about the Earth.

I found a great solution in the EcoFlow Delta 1300 Portable Power Station. With a 1,260-watt-hour capacity, which is nearly 50 times as much power as those portable power banks, and enough ports to power 13 devices at once, it fit my needs and my budget. A portable power station doesn’t promise full glamping, but it does help maintain a baseline of comfort for a small group. It’s the company’s lightest and lowest-price portable power station, packing 882 watt hours of power and only three fewer ports into a 23.6-pound package. I bought this power station with pessimistic emergency preparedness in mind.

The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed to the rafters with other campers. While RV camping may seem like a recent phenomenon, it’s actually been around for more than 100 years. Among the websites that list RV campgrounds and post very useful user ratings are RVshare/Hipcamp, RV Life and Good Sam. Other than maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. The shift to remote work early in the pandemic allowed wealthy residents to ditch big cities in droves and set up shop in smaller cities and towns nearby. While the surging costs of housing and the new freedom of remote work helped trigger this mass migration, small cities have been laying the groundwork over the last decade to entice these big-city refugees. Then came the pandemic, and remote work suddenly made small cities a viable home for wealthy professionals. For the past two decades, cities have turned to an economic development strategy I've deemed "the city authentic."
